Highlighting the heroes of the hospitality industry – Welcome to Behind The Bar

Here at SX Leisure, it’s not all about the products we sell and the services we deliver. We know how tough the hospitality industry can be for those who live and breathe it. We wanted to do something that would highlight and celebrate all the hard work and dedication of the people in your industry.

That’s why, this Autumn, we have launched our brand new series, Behind The Bar.

The Behind The Bar series has been crafted to shine a spotlight on the landlords, managers and bar staff who make your industry tick. At SX Leisure, we want to share the stories, experiences and knowledge of these unsung heroes and encourage the next generation of publicans and hospitality workers.

Let’s take a look Behind The Bar

“Get your team right, and the customers will come!”

First to be interviewed were Charlotte and Tom, from Chelmsford. Charlotte was practically born into the industry, her first experience of pub life was instant and has become her calling. She recalls cleaning glasses at her grandparent’s pub way before glasswashers were even a thing.

“I’ve grown up in pubs and worked in the industry ever since I was able to!”

Tom recalls running around pub gardens as a child whilst his parents enjoyed a drink or two. Whilst only recently entering the pub trade alongside his partner Charlotte, he enjoys the community aspect of pub life. He recalls the pair’s first anniversary of running the pub, where the community came out in support and they put on one hell of a party!

“All the locals, everyone who has supported us from the beginning was there!”

“It’s a way of life, pub life, try and be as relaxed as you can with it”

Our team then travelled to Colchester to interview Debbie, who has been working in the industry for many years but has recently taken the step up to run her community’s pub.

Some of Debbie’s favourite memories come from the people she’s met along the way. That’s both the people she has encountered behind and in front of the bar.

“It’s like an night out but you are getting paid for it!”

Pubs are the lifeblood of communities across the UK and Debbie highlights the importance of a smiling face behind the bar and a willingness to listen to stories from those in your community.

She also offered advice to aspiring landlords looking to get into the pub trade. She stressed that it’s important to be prepared for any eventuality, but also to enjoy the journey.

“Focus on getting good staff and a steady supply of products…”
